Lesson 6.

DPS SAR Guidelines

The UNM DPS Search and Rescue Medical Treatment Guidlines are written to provide evidence-based guidance to EMS SAR responders. All treatment provided in the field on a SAR mission must conform to the First Responder (EMR) and Basic EMT scope of practice regardless of any higher level of EMS licensure.

As an EMS SAR responder, it is your responsibility to know these guidelines and seek clarification or additional training if needed. These guidelines can be accessed here or on the main page of this website.

As a DPS SAR EMS provider may administer the following medications belonging to a patient:

  •  Bronchodilators, using pre-measured or metered dose inhalation device (such as nebulizers or inhalers) for acute bronchoconstriction

  •  Naloxone via nasal atomizer device (MAD) or intramuscular (IM) auto-injector

  •  Epinephrine via intramuscular (IM) auto-injector

SAR Medical Direction and Medical Coordinators offer an online medical training for NMSAR Responders once a month. You are encouraged to attend these trainings as they will explore protocols and treatments in detail. It also provides an opportunity to ask questions. More information about these online trainings can be found if you clink “training” in the top menu bar of this site.
