NMSAR Medical Direction and Coordinators
The New Mexico Department of Public Safety contracts with the UNM EMS Consortium to provide Medical Direction for SAR EMS Providers. Our appointed Medical Directors have created the DPS SAR Medical Guidelines to provide evidence-based guidance for prehospital care, particularly in wilderness and remote areas and in resource-limited situations. All treatment provided must conform to the New Mexico EMS Scope of Practice for the First Responder and Basic EMT level of licensure with the wilderness procedures additions per NM Scope of practice REGARDLESS OF ANY HIGHER LEVEL OF EMS LICENSURE for all EMS SAR providers.

Calls to UNM EMS Consortium are managed through Albuquerque Ambulance Dispatch. When you call, an AAS dispatcher will connect you with a UNMH EMS Consortium Physician once you identify as a DPS SAR EMS Provider. These physician are accustomed to paramedics and EMTs on urban or rural ambulance services. Be sure to clearly explain that you are calling as a SAR Responder in a remote location without access to equipment or medications. It is helpful to explain how long you think the patient will be out in the wilderness, the resources you have available, the patient's injuries, treatments applied, vital signs, and weather.
