Lesson 2.
SAR Medical Coordinators and Direction
The Department of Public Safety contracts with the UNM EMS Consortium to provide Medical Direction for SAR EMS Providers. Our appointed Medical Directors have created the DPS SAR Medical Guidelines to provide evidence-based guidance for prehospital care, particularly in wilderness and remote areas and in resource-limited situations. All treatment provided must conform to the New Mexico EMS Scope of Practice for the First Responder and Basic EMT level of licensure with the wilderness procedures additions per NM Scope of practice REGARDLESS OF ANY HIGHER LEVEL OF EMS LICENSURE for all EMS SAR providers (more on this next).

NMSAR Medical Coordinators
To promote the best patient outcome during missions, the Resource Officer appointed the NMSAR Medical Coordinators to provide liaison services between the NMSAR Medical Directors and the volunteer SAR EMS community. NMSAR Medical Coordinators' sole responsibility is to act as a liaison between the NMSAR volunteer EMS community and the NMDPS contracted Medical Director to ensure volunteer EMS personnel are eligible and remain eligible to function as EMS personnel on NMDPS approved SAR incidents.
